Food and drink giant PepsiCo is the latest company to be hit by the ongoing disruption to supply chains.

The lack of HGV drivers coupled with fuel shortages has already affected supermarkets, pubs and restaurants. According to the Office for National Statistics one in six shoppers say they have been unable to purchase basic food items in the last fortnight.

The disruption is hurting the economy and hitting people in their pockets yet the Government’s response has been inconsistent and inadequate. The industry sounded the alarm about the recruitment crisis in the haulier sector months ago but were ignored.

Having failed to listen or make the necessary preparations, the Government then denied the scale of the shortages.

The Prime Minister has now appointed the former Tesco boss Dave Lewis to advise on how to get goods moving again. His
appointment does not excuse the fact that action should have been taken far earlier.
