In the premiere episode of DJ Zinhle – Unexpected, DJ Zinhle addressed the social media uproar after her photo appeared on a tribute video to Anele “Nellie” Tembe at the 22-year-old’s funeral service in April.
Rapper AKA’s fiancée, Anele, fell to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Loop street in Cape Town on 11 April.
AKA and DJ Zinhle ended their relationship in 2015, shortly after welcoming their child, Kairo Forbes. The on-again, off-again couple rekindled their relationship in 2017, but their romance was short-lived.
Speaking about the photo mix-up to her friend, Nomuzi Mabena, during the premiere episode, which was filmed earlier this year, DJ Zinhle said: “The thing about my life is that a lot of things happen on social media that have nothing to do with me most of the time – that just ends up affecting me in some way, and I’ve learned not to care about it.”
The DJ, who did not comment on the social media drama at the time, now said: “It’s not about me; there’s hectic stuff happening.” She added: “…Because I’m actually not involved at all. But like now, I’m just being dragged into it, like in the worst way possible.”
Empathising with the AKA and the Tembe family, DJ Zinhle said: “There are people going through worse.” She said: “Kiernan has lost someone he loves, and then people are now making it about me.”
Although she did not tweet about how the incident made her feel, DJ Zinhle said that comments made on Twitter were “cruel” and that she did not make an official statement because “It’s not my situation to be hurt over”.
“… I can’t now make it about me,” she said.
