The Tory government has failed to plan ahead and now there will be more families struggling with the cost of living – it is disgraceful that Boris Johnson had nothing to say on the subject in his conference speech

When people are already feeling the pinch the last thing they want to hear is that energy bills will rise still further.

Yet that was the warning from the regulator Ofgem, after wholesale prices soared yet again.

The result will be more families struggling with the cost of living and more firms likely to pass on higher costs to consumers.

Given the strain this will put on households it is all the more disgraceful that Boris Johnson had nothing to say on the subject in his conference speech and all the more shameful he pressed ahead with the Universal Credit cut.

One of the reasons we are in this situation is the Government’s failure to plan ahead.

Instead of increasing our gas storage capacity Tory ministers actually reduced it.

Other countries in Europe have limited price increases because they have big reserves. We are paying the price for our Government’s incompetence and lack of foresight.

Just as we are beginning to recover from Covid there are now fears that we could be hit by a flu epidemic.

Health chiefs have braced the country for an exceptionally higher number of cases.

This is because the lockdowns over the past 18 months have made it harder to detect new strains and have given people less chance to build up immunity.
