‘Guaranteed’ solution for ‘wilted’ tomato plants to ‘bounce back instantly’

Tomatoes are pretty easy to grow well, as long as gardeners are prepared to notice quickly if something is wrong. 

As well as pests and diseases, tomato yield and quality can be affected by nutrient deficiencies, irregular watering, poor pollination and many other issues. 

One of the things that can happen to them is that they start wilting, good thing is, it is not so hard to save and revive them.

Whether their tomato plants are being kept indoors or out in the garden, there is a way for gardeners to help their wilted plants recover. 

Posting a picture of a withered tomato plant on the Gardening UK Facebook page, one woman asked what to do to help the plant. Janice Cavill wrote: “What can I do to help my tomato plant? Thanks.”

The comments section was flooded with over 120 responses, with the most common solution being to water and in some instances fertilise the plant.

Diane Smith instructed: “Put it outside in the sunshine with a water container underneath and water it well. Also, start to feed it once a week with tomato feed or seaweed feed.”

Cameron Christine suggested: “Give it a soak. Then let it drought before watering again. No self-watering pots.”

Linzi Walker wrote: “Put it in a bucket of water until the bubbles stop, then keep it well watered.”

Shirley Paterson said: “It needs loads of water twice a day and sunshine, either in a window or outside.”

Sarfraz Akram commented: “Definitely parched. The poor fella needs a good long drink and regularly.”

Colin Smith replied: “I would say give it a lot of water until the plant recovers. No need to feed until the first set of flowers have sets of green tomatoes.”

Pauline James wrote: “Give it some water lots by the look of it and some feed is guaranteed to pick up your wilted plant. It needs watering twice a day for it to bounce back. You’ll see the results instantly.”

Ally Evans suggested: “Water slowly and deeply. You only need to feed them when you have the first sign of fruit.”

Ant Collins commented: “Water it. Give it a good drenching and it’ll definitely recover. Tomatoes need a lot of water.”

According to the gardening experts at Farming Base, they claimed that it is usually “very easy to revive them”, and “all you need to revive wilted tomato plants is water and fertilisers”.

On the other hand, if they get enough water on a regular basis, they may be getting too much water, which will also cause wilting.
