High cholesterol is something many Britons struggle with but the condition can be easily prevented and treated. Benecol has launched the first soft cheese range with the proven health benefit.

Cholesterol expert brand Benecol has released the first-ever soft cheese proven to lower cholesterol.

In the UK, four in 10 adults have high cholesterol, which is a consequence of eating too much saturated fat.

One portion a day of Benecol Soft Cheese is proven to lower cholesterol.

Each pack contains eight grams of plant stanols, an active ingredient which helps lowers cholesterol levels in the blood.

High cholesterol puts you at greater risk of developing heart diseases, which is the main cause of death in the UK.

Healthcare Professional Relations Manager at Benecol, Corrine Toyn, commented: “Two of the most common causes of high cholesterol are eating too much saturated fat and lack of exercise, but it can also be hereditary.

“If you do have high cholesterol then it’s important to understand that there are simple, everyday switches that can be made to help reduce it.

“Such as switching up your usual soft cheese for Benecol Soft Cheese, which means you can continue to enjoying this snacking staple but with an added health benefit.”

DON’T MISS

Benecol’s daily serving recommendation is 40g per person (two tablespoons).

The full soft cheese range can be found at Morrisons, Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s and costs £2.85.

Registered dietitian Corrine Toyn also gave some tips on how to lower cholesterol on a daily basis.

“Introduce the daily walk,” said Toyn. “It’s recommended we do at least 30 minutes of activity every day. That could include walking to the shops instead of driving.”

She continued: “Snack more mindfully. Be more intentional with your snacking and question what you’re snacking on before doing so.”

Toyn also recommended taking it easy on the booze.

“Excessive drinking can be harmful but it can sometimes be tricky to cut down.”

The dietitian also advised setting a daily routine and sticking to it. “As much as possible, try to do the same things every day and at the same time. “Wake up at the same time, eat breakfast, do some exercise,” she advised.

“We know it’s impossible to control all the timings in your life, but when you can it’ll make a big difference.”

She also recommended: “switch up your cooking oils.

“We all need some form of fat in our diet, however it’s important to get the balance right in order to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. One switch might include an option for unsaturated fats when cooking, using oils for vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Finally, the dietitian advised keeping a close eye on the waistline: “We absolutely don’t advocate going on any drastic diets, but an expanding waistline could indicate rising cholesterol. “
