AS IT HAPPENED | France 5-0 Bafana Bafana
Star striker Kylian Mbappe scored the opening goal with a stunning curling effort that dipped over the palm Bafana goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams.
Minutes later, veteran forward Olivier Giroud netted his 48th goal for the Les Bleus from close range to double the score as he continues to chase down Thierry Henry’s scoring record of 51 goals.
In the second stanza, France continued to display their dominance as Mbappe scored his second of the night from the penalty spot after Siyanda Xulu tugged and pulled the Paris Saint-Germain forward down to the ground.
Bafana continued to be bystanders as substitute Wissam Ben Yedder tapped in from close range courtesy of a well-orchestrated assisted header from Manchester United star Paul Pogba.
It then got worse as Bafana went down to 10-men.
Khuliso Mudau was shown a straight red-card for a high boot that caught the leg of a French player.
Capping off the night, Matteo Guendouzi was introduced from the bench and scored the fifth goal to what was a great football lesson for Hugo Broos’ charges.
Bafana arrived in Lille, coming off a goalless draw against Guinea on Friday in Belgium, while France was put to the test against Côte d’Ivoire as they had to come from behind to claim a 2-1 win.
It was France’s first match against South Africa in 12 years.
Bafana claimed a historic 2-1 victory over France on home soil at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
