A man has been charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend in a “horrendous” attack that left her toddler soaked in blood.

Mackenzie Anderson, 21, known as “Max”, was found dead from “multiple stab wounds” outside her home in Mayfield, a suburb of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia.

Hardened senior police officers who attended were left stunned by the grisly crime scene, the MailOnline reports.

Cops have now charged Tyrone Thompson, 22, after arresting him at the scene. They allege he gained entry into Ms Anderson’s home before carrying out a “horrendous attack” in-front of her three-year-old son.

The young boy was left “covered in blood” following the assault which cops have linked to domestic violence.

At around 10.40pm on the night of the attack, Ms Anderson made a call to emergency services – reporting that a man had broken in.

When cops arrived on Friday, they found the young mum lying on the landing outside her apartment covered in stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, she couldn’t be saved.

The suspect was in police custody when he was taken to hospital after sustaining a hand injury.

Further to the murder rap, Thompson has also been charged for enter with intent and breaching an apprehended domestic violence order.

It’s understood that the suspect is not related to the toddler.

The horrific scene deeply affected hardened police officers who found the young mum and her little son “covered in blood”.

Newcastle City Commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said: “I’ve just spent the last 20 minutes or so viewing body worn footage and it was a horrendous scene, horrendous.”

Police confirmed the youngster wasn’t injured during the incident.

Ms Anderson was in recovery for drug addiction, which began with using methamphetamine at the age of 16.

In May 2019, she posted details about her personal struggle on Facebook.

She wrote: ‘Addiction is a real thing, addiction is a disease that makes you too selfish to see the havoc and mess in your life that you created or care about the people’s who’s lives you shattered and hurt.

“It makes you blind to who you are when you are high.

“I’ve been clean from ice for three years now and I still count myself as a person in recovery, only in the process of fixing myself from being an addict is when I found out who I really was.”

Superintendent Humphrey confirmed the boy wasn’t harmed and has been taken to live with relatives.
