South Africa’s social welfare
system is suffering under the unbearable weight of corruption, incompetence,
and dwindling state resources, writes Mpumelelo Mkhabela. 

South Africa’s social welfare
system is under strain. And unless drastic steps are taken to unburden it,
things can get worse – and cause a national rebellion. 

By the social welfare system, I
mean the major financial assistance mechanisms the state has designed to deal
with the plight of the poor.
