When laundry starts to smell after being in the washing machine it could be a sign the washer is dirty. Body oil, dirt, hair, and scum get trapped in the gasket, seal, and detergent dispenser which can then cause clothes to smell unpleasant.
Another issue that can cause clothes to smell is the product being used to wash the clothes themselves.
With this in mind, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their solution to ensure washing smells clean and fresh after it’s been washed.
The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.5 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.
Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.
On one such group, Facebook user Leanne Loder asked: “Hey everyone, I need some help. My washing machine isn’t washing my clothes properly.
“They come out smelling mouldy, I have cleaned it all the way through, put it on a hot wash, washed my clothes on longer cycles too but it hasn’t helped.”

Louise Stevens wrote: “Mine was doing the same. Made the switch back to powder and no more smelly washing.”
Amy Griffith suggested: “I had the same issue, machine was six months old and we used liquid, switched to powder and there’s no longer a horrible smell but unfortunately there’s no pleasant scent to the washing either.”
Sinead Rowe said: “I had the same issue using pods. Switched back to powder and washing smells gorgeous again.”
Diane Smith replied: “Use powder straight in the drum.”
Most households have washing powder but for those who don’t, it can be bought online or from most online stores.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using Zoflora, a washing tablet, a dishwasher tablet, white vinegar and baking soda and cleaning the seals of the machine.
Laura Coley commented: “Capful of Zoflora in very wash helps this.”
Mandy Turner replied: “Put a washing tablet in and wash without clothes in on a high wash worked for me.”
Fiona Perry said: “Have a look at your seals and see if they need a good scrub. Sometimes you have to fold back the seal, if that makes sense, and get a toothbrush in there.”
Doreen Hayes replied: “Put a diswasher tablet in your washing machine on a hot wash.”
Dee Gillespie suggested: “This happens to mine so I put it on a hot wash with distilled white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.”
Laura Francis said: “I had this the other day and my machine isn’t old, I’ve cleaned the filter.
“Then I did a Dr Beckmanns washing machine cleaner and switched from supermarket’s own brand to Ariel’s washing liquid and it smells lovely!”
Katie Finegan wrote: “Put soda crystals in and do a hot wash on it.”
