Though Port of Seattle commissioner is a part-time position, Peter Steinbrueck considers it a full-time job, bringing leadership and commitment to the port’s mission of delivering economic development and jobs to the region. That dedication has earned the editorial board’s endorsement for Port of Seattle Commissioner, Position 4.
During his first term, Steinbrueck helped the port navigate through a difficult time, restoring confidence after a botched bonus scheme and the abrupt departure of the port’s executive director. He has pushed for more transparency at the port by opening previously private meetings to the public and increasing audit functions.
As the pandemic took hold last year, Steinbrueck led the port’s response as commission president. He also launched a commission task force on policing and civil rights after the killing of George Floyd, prompting an extensive review of policing practices at the port.
He has also led on equity and environmental protection efforts, establishing the $10 million South King County Fund to address environmental and economic hardships faced by communities near the airport. As co-chair of the Sustainability, Energy, and Climate Committee, he oversees the port’s environmental projects, including on climate resiliency and electrification of the seaport.
If reelected, Steinbrueck said he looks forward to helping shepherd the successful delivery of the port’s $3.8 billion in construction projects, as well as continuing to improve diversity in contracting and sharing more of the port’s opportunity and prosperity with underserved communities.
Steinbrueck faces a challenge from another candidate with a well-known last name in Seattle politics, Toshiko Hasegawa. The executive director of the state’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, Hasegawa is bright, energetic and committed to public service. She is a strong contender, but the incumbent’s experience and record during his first term give him the edge.
Voters should reelect Steinbrueck to Commissioner Position 4.
