Tyson Fury calls Deontay Wilder ‘weak’ as row erupts at press conference

Tyson Fury has ripped into Deontay Wilder’s “fragile mentality” as the pair gear up for their heavyweight title trilogy.

Fury handily defeated Wilder in their February 2020 rematch, stopping him in the seventh round after dropping him twice earlier in the bout.

And despite Wilder appearing to accept the defeat graciously in the ring after the bout, he has come out in the time after claiming a number of excuses for why he lost, including many that Fury cheated.

The accusation has been disputed by all parties involved and widely ridiculed, with Fury adding that he feels it is indicative of a weak mindset on the part of Wilder.

“He’s only happy when he’s in control, when he’s winning,” Fury said in a recent interview with ESPN.

“And I’ve learned that he doesn’t like to take punches himself, and I’ve learned that he’s a very fragile mentality as well.

“With all these excuses he’s been making, all these stories he’s made up in his own little brain-world [he seems] very, very, very mentally unstable.

“I didn’t have him down for that type of person, but it always shows you a man’s ingredients when he’s at his lowest point in his career, or in his life.”

Fury has said, however, that he almost feels pity for Wilder, explaining that he feels you can’t fully take on board comments from somebody in a poor mental state.

He believes that Wilder is currently in a “bad place”, and shouldn’t be taken seriously when he makes severe allegations against his rival.

“It’s a tough place to be,” Fury continued. “I wouldn’t want to be there.

“I’ve been in some low points in my life with depression and anxiety and all that, but he’s probably in a low place right now himself.

“That’s one thing that I’ve been talking about a lot, is acceptance.

Can Deontay Wilder beat Tyson Fury tonight? Let us know in the comments section!

“You have to be able to let go of defeat, of your darkest moments, to be able to recover from them, and I’ve not seen Deontay Wilder do that yet.

“I’ve never really paid too much attention to all these accusations because I know it’s coming from an unwell person.

“When someone is unwell, I don’t believe they can be held accountable for their actions, especially verbal actions, because if he was in his right mind he wouldn’t think like this.”

Fury has bulked up even further in an effort to once again stop Wilder, weighing in at a career-highest 277 lbs at last night’s weigh ins.

Wilder also tipped the scales particularly heavy at 238 lbs, and drew controversy by once again raising issues with Fury’s gloves, this time complaining about the horse hair in his padding.

He has opted to change gloves, and believes that he will be on a “level playing field” with Fury despite what he feels is more gamesmanship from the Brit.
