Donny van de Beek backed to succeed at Man Utd by Netherlands boss

Donny van de Beek’s time at Manchester United seemingly goes from bad to worse with each passing matchweek, the £40m-valued Dutchman failing to establish himself as a regular in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans despite being well over a year into his time at the club.

The former Ajax midfielder was rewarded with a rare start for the visit of West Ham, but failed to impress yet again as United crashed out to David Moyes’ side – the first time the Scotsman has registered a win over his former side since he was sacked from his post as United boss in 2014.

Manuel Lanzini’s ninth minute effort was enough to dump United out at the first hurdle, but Van de Beek was singled out by Sky Sports pundit and former England international Casey Stoney during the defeat.

When analysing the only goal of the game, Stoney explained: “It’s poor defending, he’s got him in his eyesight, I don’t know why he thinks he’s got to go affect the ball, he just needs to stay with his player.

“He’s been drawn to the ball, he’s had his eyes on the ball, not checked his shoulder, there’s only one ball from the by-line and that’s the cut-back, that’s the danger so you’ve got to stay on your player and realise the danger.”

Former Hammers striker Carlton Cole conceded he was surprised by his old side’s approach, praising their attacking style.

“It was more than I expected, I thought we would come here cagey, test the water. While West Ham have been on top they capitalised, Lanzini holds his run, Van de Beek had no idea he was there.”

West Ham have been rewarded for their efforts with a clash against United’s fierce local rivals and ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City in the fourth round.

The result continues the theme of United’s struggle this season in cup competitions, while they remain unbeaten in the Premier League, their two defeats have come in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Will Van de Beek come good for Man Utd? Have your say here.

The clash marked the second time these sides have met in just four days, West Ham avenging Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat by getting one over on Solskajer’s side this evening.

Jesse Lingard was the man who broke Hammers hearts at the weekend, his late winner made all the more painful given his ties to West Ham after his successful loan spell at the club last season.

There would be no such drama at Old Trafford however, as West Ham held on for a memorable victory.
