A woman who thought her husband was ignoring her messages after a night out was shocked to learn he had died in a freak accident.

Bonnie Caldwell, from New Zealand, said Matt went to watch a rugby game with friends a couple of hours away from home.

They last chatted on the phone at around midnight but the next day he was not replying to any of her messages.

Bonnie explained in a TikTok that she thought it was strange but assumed he was just hungover.

But later in the day, she received a text from her brother-in-law asking to go over to the house and was told that Matt had tragically died, the Daily Star reports.

“What happened was where they were all staying, there was sort of like a bank (a cliff) and he had walked down the bank to go to the toilet and he didn’t realise he was at the edge of the bank and he just dropped straight down, he misjudged it,” she explained.

The TikToker said the incident happened eight months ago – and said she copes by using a “dark sense of humour”

“We don’t know if he tripped or if he just walked off the edge but he was looking at his phone because the phone was facing up.

“So he fell and he died on impact – really horrific freak accident that none of us could have really prevented unfortunately.”

The TikToker said the incident happened eight months ago – and said she copes by using a “dark sense of humour”.

In the video, Bonnie said: “Me getting s***ty because my husband was on a boy’s trip and wasn’t replying to me – he was dead.”

She added: “We’re all doing as well as we can be right now. But I do have a dark sense of humour which is a really big coping mechanism for me.”
